NIFTY buyers and sellers: reading who is lifting the offer and who is hitting the bid

NIFTY buyers and sellers is one of the most-typed order-flow phrases in India, and it hides a trap: every trade has both. What the tape can tell you is which side was in a hurry, the buyer who lifted the offer or the seller who hit the bid, and how much money each side moved. This page explains that read, shows three sessions of large NIFTY option prints split by side, walks through one expiry minute, and says plainly what the numbers cannot tell you.

Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so what is being counted?

Aggression. A trade prints at the ask when a buyer accepts the seller's price: the buyer lifted the offer. It prints at the bid when a seller accepts the buyer's price: the seller hit the bid. The resting side was patient; the crossing side was not. Order-flow traders call the running difference delta. TBTflow tags every large print on NIFTY futures, the fifty index stocks (cash and futures) and the NIFTY and SENSEX option chains by the side it printed on, and keeps the ones it cannot place as unclassified rather than forcing a guess.

NSE publishes no aggressor flag, so the side is inferred from the quote at the instant of the print. That inference is exact when the print sits on the bid or the ask and honest when it does not: on 9 September 2026, 20 percent of the money in large index-option prints sat between the quotes and stayed unclassified.

Three sessions of large NIFTY option prints, split by side

Large means at least ₹0.5 crore in a single print on an index option, ₹3 crore on a stock, ₹13 crore on the NIFTY future. The table is the money in those prints, in crore, by the side they printed on.

SessionLifted the offerHit the bidUnclassifiedPrints

Tue 8 Sep 2026 (NIFTY expiry)₹3,493 cr₹3,824 cr₹722 cr8,248
Wed 9 Sep 2026₹1,454 cr₹1,649 cr₹1,058 cr5,170

Two things the data shows. Money hitting the bid exceeded money lifting the offer on all three days, by 10 to 24 percent: in index options the patient side is more often the buyer of premium and the hurried side more often the seller of it, which is what a market of writers and hedgers looks like. And the expiry day carried more than twice the large-print money of the days around it, most of it after 14:00. The last-30-minutes page measures what that flow did to the short straddle.

One minute on expiry day: 15:20 on 8 September 2026

In that single minute the ledger recorded 204 large index-option prints lifting the offer for ₹403 crore against 158 prints hitting the bid for ₹249 crore. The 23,650 put went from ₹27 to ₹95 in 52 seconds with the index almost unmoved. Read as "buyers versus sellers" the minute says buyers won. Read with the open interest, which fell by millions of contracts at that strike, it says something more precise: the buyers were writers closing a short put into settlement. The tape shows the side; the chain shows the position; together they show the mechanism. Neither shows intent on its own. The full minute-by-minute record is on the gamma blast page.

Cash and stock futures: eight sessions

The same tagging runs on the fifty index stocks. Large cash prints, ₹3 crore and above, by side:

Cash tilts the other way from options: lifted money exceeded hit money on six of the eight sessions. The biggest single prints of 9 September were DLF, ₹368 crore lifted at 09:54:55, five seconds after a ₹278 crore block crossed in the same stock; PAYTM, ₹181 crore lifted at 09:24; and the NIFTY future, ₹134 crore at 14:35, which the ledger tagged as a cross. Block crosses are kept separate because a negotiated trade printed through the book says nothing about who was in a hurry: on 9 September crosses were ₹2,071 crore of the ₹6,500 crore in large cash prints.

What the read is good for. Absorption, the moment heavy hitting stops moving price, and its opposite, a lift that finds no offers; a settle walk where one side's money keeps arriving; a print whose size is out of scale with the minute. Each of those is a fact about the tape at a time. None of them is a forecast, and TBTflow does not turn them into one.

Today's close: puts against calls, 15:00 to 15:30 on 9 September

In the last half hour, NIFTY put prints lifted ₹258 crore and hit ₹275 crore across 650 large prints; call prints lifted ₹43 crore and hit ₹63 crore across 137. Puts carried five times the money of calls into a close that finished 31 points below the 15:00 level. That is the shape of a session hedging lower, and it is all the tape can say about it.

Strike-wise sellers volume: what the chain shows and what it does not

People searching for nifty strike wise sellers volume usually open an option chain, and the chain cannot answer. Its volume column is both sides of every contract; its open interest is positions, not the side that opened them. Only the tape gives the side, print by print, and only the resting book shows where sellers are waiting rather than acting. Gamma Terrain shows both per strike for NIFTY and SENSEX, next to the pin and the walls; the option chain page explains the four chain fields and the OI walls page explains what heavy writer positions do to price.

Quick questions

What does 'NIFTY buyers and sellers' mean in order flow?
Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so the phrase only makes sense as a question about aggression: which side crossed the spread. A print at the ask means a buyer lifted the offer; a print at the bid means a seller hit the bid. TBTflow tags every large NIFTY, stock and index-option print by that side. It is a read of who was in a hurry, not of who the parties were.
How do you know whether a NIFTY option trade was a buyer or a seller?
By where it printed against the quote at that instant. NSE publishes no aggressor flag, so the side is inferred: at or above the ask is a lift (buy-side), at or below the bid is a hit (sell-side), and a print between the two is left unclassified. On 9 September 2026 unclassified prints were 20 percent of the money in large index-option prints; they are shown, not guessed.
Where can I see NIFTY strike-wise sellers volume?
Not on an option chain. The chain's volume column counts both sides of every contract, and open interest counts positions, not who sold them. Strike-wise seller volume needs the tape: each print at a strike, tagged by the side it hit. TBTflow's Gamma Terrain shows that per strike for NIFTY and SENSEX, with the resting book on each side.
Does the tape tell you whether NIFTY is a buy or a sell?
No, and TBTflow does not answer that question. The tape shows which side crossed the spread and how much money did it; it does not show intent (a lift can be a short seller covering), identities, or what happens next. TBTflow is a data and education product, not registered with SEBI as an adviser, and nothing on this page is a recommendation.
